We hope you and your families are still managing to find some joy amidst the chaos.
2020 has been a year of uncertainty, worry, and loss for many people around the world. However, Christmas always offers us an opportunity to reflect on what we’re grateful for; to recognise it is often our people and our communities that have stepped up and been the positivity in a year that’s been tough for so many. So this year, we propose that you consider thoughtful, sustainable giving.
The difference between shopping with an independent is the smile and pure joy the maker feels when you complete a purchase. The difference is love poured into your items, the notes in with the packages, and the sense of community you feel when you shop locally. So, with that in mind we have compiled a list of our favourite independent shops and makers, for you to peruse and select some of the best gifts you’ve ever given. All of the shops listed below have had first-hand purchases by us, and are not affiliated in any way. Recommendations from the heart, if you will…
Florence in Flowers
As well as stunning fresh bouquets, Florence in Flowers offers the most beautiful dried arrangements; shipped nationally too. They come in a muted brown glass vase and are truly the perfect gift as they are everlasting. Especially lovely gifts for those we might not be able to see this year, but still want to let know they are in our thoughts and hearts.
All Day Cake
This place is aptly named, as once you have tried one of Sophie’s cakes you will want to eat it all day. The hazelnut chocolate cake with it’s rich ganache centre is what chocolate dreams are made of. A treat for the whole family to tuck into over the Christmas period, as perhaps cake isn’t the most traditional of gifts. Although, if I opened an All Day Cake on Christmas day, I wouldn’t be mad.
The fabrics and designs from Soleil Dee are glorious, and with such an array of products to chose from you might have trouble deciding what to go with. They cover everything textile based: aprons, face masks, toiletry bags, and hold-all’s. Our recommendation would be to purchase a toiletry bag, and fill it with soaps from Mrsoap, the perfect hand-made combo!
The up and coming scented candle of choice from Feu Candles in Ancoats. The packaging and design is modern and fun, but nothing is better than the sensational smells from their candles and wax melts. Feu Candles are a Providence Studio favourite, if you have purchased from our re-brand you will know we love the sense of smell. We recommend the Charred Oak scent which leaves your room smelling sensational for days.
Half Baked Bits
The most fun jewellery for lovers of colour and quirk. The fabulous products from Half Baked Bits include earrings, necklaces, and pins. Everyone has that one friend who loves all things bright and wonderful, and these pieces are perfect for them. Absolute show stopper earrings for the snazziest of your friends and family.
This one is for the locals (sorry). Based on Radium Street in Ancoats you'll have to pop in to see these lovely lot. Always greeted with smiling faces and baked goods that you will undoubtedly get addicted to. We are regulars here for a cinnamon bun, however the real star of the show is the Mad Brød (meal bread) and it is truly divine. We recommend pulling up early on a weekday to fuel your Christmas shopping.
35 Radium Street, Ancoats, M4 6AD
We're taking the opportunity to tell you a bit about our artworks whilst we're here. A lovely gift for art-lovers, not least because of our beautiful packaging which we are especially proud of. Not only can you recycle it, but you can also repurpose it, from the gorgeous box they arrive in, to the hand picked fabrics they're wrapped in. Everything is considered, even the smell. Opening up a Providence Studio piece is a sensory experience you don't want to miss out on.
As we reach the end of the list, we realise all of our recommendations are female led (or co-led) businesses, and nothing makes us happier than supporting our fellow businesswomen. So be sure to follow on Instagram, sign up to mailing lists, and most of all: shop small.
We hope you have a peaceful Christmas.
With love, Providence Studio Team x
